The Floral Cottage - 8 November 2011

A house doesn't become a home until it is filled with love. Neighbours don't become friends until a connection is made based on sharing and caring. A neighbourhood can be made up of strangers or kind people who will become friends in short order. We are blessed to have a home in a wonderful neighbourhood and to have neighbours who have touched us with their welcoming kindness and gentility.

We shall miss Eleanor's love of all things floral, her humour and wit, her cuiousity in the building of the Firehouse and her tolerance for all the changes we brought to her doorstep.

We'd also like to thank Colin and Brad and Michael for finding the quiet jobs that they could do today out of respect for the loss of our dear neighbour.

October Flowers

There weren't any new flowers this month, but there is still colour in the garden. In these pictures you can see the berries on the Barberry, berries on the Rose bush, Sedum, Witch Hazel, and Rose Hips.

Soffit Vents, Porch Supports, and Windows - 7 November 2011

It was a glorious day in Lunenburg and when you get one of these in November you had better make the best of it. So, we did. Colin and his team finished off the soffit vents and then installed some great looking supports for the little porch roof. I started cleaning the windows in preparation for painting them.

Soffit Vents - 4 November 2011

I must admit that I always feel a built guilty when I don't go out to the Firehouse during the day. I guess it could partially be that I am nosy and just want to know what the team is working on. I prefer to think that its that I enjoy seeing their work and participating, albeit somewhat vicariously, in what they are doing. I certainly learn a lot from them. Today, after an initial greeting, I didn't go out to see what was going on until around 3 pm. It was amazing to see that by that point the whole east-side soffit vent and molding trim had been competed. By the end of the day the west side was also done - or very nearly. It was dark when they finished, so again I was out of the loop on what was going on. I just know that what is done has been well done and it looks grand.

Oh, and by the way, if you want to see a master carpenter's portrait, go to www.brooksofcanada.ca and view under People.

Dormer Trim and Re-Enforcement - 3 November 2011

On a nice day it is such a pleasure to be working on the outside of the Firehouse. Of course, without windows and doors, its also more pleasant working on the inside when the weather is good.

The trim on the fourth dormer was finished today and there was lots of work done on some re-enforcement on the first floor. We got several sheets of Masonite and put them down on the floor, too. This will keep the floor nice and clean, as well as helping the curing process.

Dormer Trim - 2 November 2011

There are lots of little details around the dormer windows and today they were being worked on. Two thirds done on the west side of the Firehouse.

Concrete Floor - 1 November 2011

Yipppeeee, the cement floor was installed today. Thanks to Bridgewater Ready Mix and the guys from GLW Concrete Floors we have a lovely new concrete floor. Gerald, Jason and Vincent where here at 7 am this morning to start the process and then Vincent stayed for most of the day to spread, smooth, polish and seal. It looks great.

And as difficult as it was to climb in when they couldn't go near the floor, Colin, Brad and Michael did so and kept working on the main doors, the trim and the windows all day.
